Photoshop Basics

1. Best tutorials:
Try to find tutorials that describe how to do things in detail and accurate. At first, it is most likely best to follow tutorials exactly how they were written. Once you are comfortable with the fundamentals, then use the rules only. Apply them as idea to come up with your own creations.
2. Learn shortcuts:
There are a lot of keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. It is much faster to press a key than to move your mouse over to the tool palette, find your tool, then move the mouse back. It does not take long to memorize the regularly used shortcuts (for example, press the 'G' key to use the gradient  color tool).
3. Start with fundamental tasks:
Use smaller amount colors and less complicated forms in your designs until you get a feel for what works well together and what does not.
4. Break up large graphics:
If you want to create a website design in Photoshop then do not save the full thing as one image - it will take long time to load in a browser. Learn how to use slices - this will help you in creating a fast-loading, well coordinated site.
5. Hang in there:
It's easy to look at other people's designs and compare them to your own creation. There are so many brilliant designers out there, but only you have your unique ideas. Follow others and try to  develop the skills needed and to translate your ideas into masterpieces.
